Running a successful retail store requires creating a visually appealing environment for shoppers. Lighting is an important aspect of any space. Once you’ve designed your retail architecture and created a space that suits the products and customers, use these lighting tips to enhance the retail experience.

Light is attention-grabbing. Customers are more likely to notice a specific product being highlighted by a spotlight before taking in other areas of the store.

Though the whole retail space should be lit well enough for people to see, you can accentuate specific products, signs, or displays through lighting design. If you’re trying to move a specific clothing line that’s on sale, set up mannequins with a sign under spotlights or prominent pendant lights.

Lighting can accentuate or detract from the brand. Before choosing a lighting style, consider what you want customers to feel when they come into your store. A trendy boutique may offer dramatic spotlights and ambient lighting, while a small, family-owned shop may want more understated recessed lighting.

Consider the lighting color, as well. Cool and warm lighting temperatures can invite in different demographics, so make sure yours is attracting the correct audience.

Your retail store should be evenly lit throughout the entire space. Only including overhead lighting can create tons of shadows. Avoid harsh shadows by mixing together ambient and accent lighting to create a more consistent appearance. Lighting the walls will also make the space feel more spacious.
